Say It Out Loud (A Great Method in ED Recovery)
You’ll know from our podcasts that we often talk about the power of ‘saying it out loud’ in recovery. Here, Sarah talks about why it has such positive benefits and how to use it to good effect.
- Commit to the universe
By saying it out loud it’s as if you’re committing your actions to something bigger than yourself. If you state loud and proud “I’m having a cheeseburger please” the world and universe has helped you so there’s no going back on your decision
- Your squad can help
Involve those around you with this recovery action and tell them this is what you’re going to do. They will then listen to your out-loud statement and help you follow through. Chances are they’ve been waiting to help you in such a productive way.
- Get out of your ED head
The second something is said out loud, it prevents the conversation being in your head, between the healthy you and the ED bully. If choices stay in your head it’s likely the ED bully will win, but once they’re out, there’s nothing the bully can do about it.
- It makes choices easier.
If you’re in a café and the menu is mind blowing, by saying out loud the first thing your eye lands on means the anxiety over the choice is gone. If you know menu’s are a minefield, say out loud “I don’t need a menu thanks, I’m having the tuna jacket” (café), “Hunters Chicken” (Pub).
- It’s not just about choices.
Saying it out loud isn’t just about choices, it can be just shouting at the top of your lungs “I’ve had enough of this S***”. When your in a battle with ED in your head, sometimes the only way to shut it up is to shout and scream at it.
- You must follow through
Like any recovery action, the most important element is you must follow through. Once you’ve said and chosen something out loud you need to sit and follow through. This can be painful and stressful, but each follow through moves you one step closer to recovery
